Masterful workmanship – over 100 years old

Item Description

MG 08 Maxim manufactured by Gwf SPANDAU in 1917, completed with Craig Carroll side plate – extremely well done. This early Maxim saw serious action and has water jacket repairs. It is in very good condition. Comes with original German sled mount dated 1916 and three pieces of the armor system: the Sled Mount Inner Armor Shield, the Front Surface and full length water jacket armor (it is unknown if the armor is original or reproduction). The sled mount has all of the accessories: an extra Maxim barrel with excellent bore, two extra Maxim locks, cartridge retrieval tongs, broken shell extractor, and chamber clearing tool. It also includes a muzzle gland for the MG08 barrel, which allows the machinegun to shoot at a slower cyclic rate that when using the Muzzle gland/booster assembly with flash hider, also included. The serial numbers of all of the main components of this machinegun match: the water jacket, top cover, left side plate, fusee spring cover, even the two lubricant container/brushes that screw into the top of the spade grips have serial numbers matching the machinegun. Also includes original WWI ZF-12 Maxim scope with excellent optics, in original case. Uses readily available 8mm Mauser ammunition and comes with one easy to hand-load 8mm WWI Schwarzlose belt that works better in the Maxims than the original cloth belts. Includes Combination Hammer/Spanner wrench, steam hose and 1916 Water Chest with spout. Fully transferable. $24,500

If you’re considering purchasing a Maxim machine gun, make certain you buy Dolf Goldsmith’s remarkable book, The Devil’s Paintbrush – Sir Hiram Maxim’s Gun. After reading through this masterful study of the Maxim machinegun, and enjoying its many historic photographs, you will be proud to own a WWI German Maxim machine gun.

The thrill is in shooting a machine gun that is one hundred years old. You don’t just stick in a magazine, cock it and pull the trigger, like it’s an M11-9. You have to know how it works. You have to have studied it, taken it apart and put it back together, read about it. You have to understand that machine gun that has lasted a century,… waiting for you.
