PW87/1887 Shotgun
Posted by Jeff Baumeister on May 29th 2017
I have had my PW87 for little over three months now, and I have to say I love it. I held off on writing a review until I got the gun figured out completely. It is a very accurate copy of the Winchester 1887/1901 design. It’s tough and dependable. Out of the box, it was very clean and the action cycled smoothly. There was plenty of lubrication in the action on it. Machining on the internals was a little rough with all those edges and moving parts in it. I have in total put somewhere close to 150 rounds through this gun. I have used 00 buckshot, smooth bore slugs, and standard birdshot. The first thing I noticed with this gun, is the sensitivity to certain ammo. The first ammo I ran through it was Winchester Universal Load and I was lucky if one shell out of twenty-five ejected properly. Most cases with that ammo is that it left the shell in the chamber. I kept firing it and oiling it up, but hangups still occurred. I tried high brass (00 buck, slugs) and they worked flawlessly. It shoots pretty hard with high brass, but I love the feeling of authority it gives. I eventually picked up some Federal Premium Target Load for trapshooting use, and I still have yet to have problems with that ammo either. After a few times of shooting, I noticed some plate screws were coming loose. Snugging them up with a screwdriver fixed that quickly. In short, don’t cheap out on buying ammunition. Buy ammo with brass hulls, not aluminum, and keep it clean and oiled. The gun is built well, and shoots very hard. Definitely recommended!

Great Deal

Impact guns handled the transaction in a fast professional matter. Recently ordered and received gun in 8 days from Impact to my possession. The gun was made in 8.15.15. The action is smoother than what I read concerning the operation of the gun.

I picked one of these up from a local store a couple of years ago (the price here is better, but not by a large enough amount to make me upset). This gun has functioned fine for my needs. So far I’ve used it for sporting clays and to shoot some fruit out in the desert. I have had a few issued with the extractors catching the shells instead of ejecting them, but I found that this was a problem with the way I was throwing the lever. It seems that the internals of this thing are decent, but a bit rough round the edges. They could probably be improved by polishing them to an extent(something I plan on doing once I have the time). Other than that it’s a fun little shotgun to play around with. I wouldn’t recommend it for hunting or someone who really cares about their score in trap or skeet, but if you want something unique to play with that won’t break the bank then the PW87 isn’t a bad choice.
One thing you should note is that due to the lever action this gun will only accept 2 3/4 inch shells. longer shells will not eject properly and could even get stuck. Just an advisory, the gun says the same thing on the barrel anyways.
Hope this helps you make a decision on this shotgun.
